Solomon Islands Overview
The Solomon Islands are a South Pacific archipelago east of Papua New Guinea. They occupy a strategic location on sea routes between the South Pacific Ocean, the Solomon Sea, and the Coral Sea. The climate in Solomon Islands is tropical monsoon type, mainly hot and humid, which are tempered to some extent by moderating sea breezes, with little annual variation in temperature and few extremes of temperature and weather. April to November is the wet season in Solomon Islands, considered to be the “good” season though it is best to visit from July to September.

Discovered some 5000 years ago, the Solomon Islands Group has since that time enticed many travelers to enjoy the blessings of its paradise islands. The Spanish with Alvaro de Mendana were the first Europeans to visit and christening the island Solomon. Among the various tourist attractions in Solomon Islands both natural and cultural, its golden palm fringed beaches, electric blue waters, magnificent coral reefs and an amazing sea life are its prime draw.
The Solomon Islands have many excellent opportunities to see the native wildlife in nearly untouched settings. More than one hundred uninhabited islands make up the Western and Anarvon Islands, the world’s largest nesting ground for the endangered hawksbill turtle. Offshore, two of the most exciting dives are at Bonegi I and the Bonegi II, two sunken Japanese transport ships which are now home to schools of fish and brightly colored coral.
Solomon Islands Activities
Travelers can experience more examples of native culture by trekking to the remote province of Temotu. Here, amid active volcanoes, daily life is virtually unaffected by modern life. One of the best examples of the old way of life is in local trading that is still being conducted using red-feather money. But if you want a more of an adventure, you may go to the beach and suit yourself in one of the many water sports around.

Both Asian and European food is served and the cuisine is generally good. There are two Chinese restaurants in Honiara which are quite popular.
Solomon Islands Shopping & Nightlife
Solomon is a comparatively quiet region, although there are a few clubs with music and dancing, the occasional film show, and snooker and darts. The clubs offer temporary membership to visitors to make sure to tend to everything you need for your night out. Local purchases include mother-of-pearl items, walking sticks, carved and inlaid wood, copper murals, conch shells and rare varieties of cowrie.
Getting To & Around the Solomon Islands
The International Airport, Henderson, is 7 miles east of the capital, Honiara. Scheduled flights depart from Brisbane, Australia about three times a week. There are flights departing from Vanuatu, Fiji and a handful of other South Pacific neighbors. There are also cruises to Solomon from neighboring islands.
