Although the Highlands are composed of many distinct regions the best known of them is the Southern Highland area. The Eastern Highlands have the highest mountain of the country, the Mount Wilhelm. The peak or summit of the island has views of both the north and south coast of New Guinea from there. The area also has the Wahgi River, which is considered one of the best whitewater rafting destinations in the world.
