Fiji Overview

Fiji is a Melanesian country in the South Pacific, lying about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. The climate of Fiji is tropical marine, characterized by only slight seasonal temperature variation. The best months to visit the islands are from May to October due to the tropical cyclonic storms during November to April.

Fiji Main Attractions

Fiji is well known for the different groups of islands. The Mamanuca Group and adjacent Yasawa Group of islands lie just off the coast of Viti Levu. You can pick one of the numerous resorts, big, small, eco-friendly or ultra luxurious and unwind on a white sandy beach.

Fiji is a country with rich historical background. This colorful history is contained, or let’s say collected extensively in a venue, the Fiji Museum. This museum has the entire collection of Fijian artifacts. The museum’s collection was founded in 1904 and originally displayed in the town hall.

Fiji Activities

Apart from the typical water sports and activities, diving had been the prime attraction and activity. Fiji’s reefs and warm water provide a great opportunity for keen divers. First-timers can take the chance to get certified PADI training at any number of dive centers throughout the country. For those preferring shallow waters, there are snorkeling possibilities in abundance. If you don’t prefer going underwater, there are lots of festivals to enjoy.

Fiji Accommodation & Dining

Fiji is well set-up for travelers and provides a great variety of accommodation options, ranging from eco-lodges to high-class resorts or even private islands for the ultra-rich. For those seeking a more cultural experience, it is possible to arrange an overnight stay in one of the villages. Don't expect luxuries like hot water or flushing toilets; this option is for those prepared to rough it out a little. However, it’s still a nice place to spend your vacation because of the quality service and great people. Locals of Fiji usually eat in the cafes and small restaurants that are found in every town. The food is wholesome, cheap, and highly variable in quality.

Fiji Shopping & Nightlife

Having a drink of Kava while in Fiji is part of the experience for most backpackers. It is a mildly intoxicating drink that relaxes, without disrupting mental clarity. Drinking Kava is very much a social thing, particularly among young men in Fiji. It bears a considerable resemblance to dirty dishwater and tastes a bit like it as well. It is usually drunk from a half coconut shell while sitting around in a circle. If you would like to add some tropical style to your wardrobe or interior, then Fiji can offer some great finds. You can choose a new sarong, some handcrafted jewelries and souvenirs for friends or something to decorate the house. Fiji has great markets and get in the mood to bargain, especially with the Indo-Fijian's.

Getting To & Around Fiji

Nadi International Airport is Fiji’s main international airport. Suva airport also has some international flights. Air New Zealand and Air Pacific fly to Fiji directly from Los Angeles International Airport in USA and from Incheon International Airport in South Korea, as well as many other locations.
