Clipperton Island Overview
Clipperton Island, also known as Isle of Passion, is a small, ring shaped atoll located at the southwest of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean. It has no permanent residents and is mainly visited by Mexican fishermen and French Navy patrols. The island has a tropical oceanic climate, making April to November the best time to visit.
Clipperton Island Main Attractions
The amazing island of Clipperton is known for the Clipperton Rock. It is in the south-east and the first thing you’ll see when approaching the atoll. It is volcanic outcrop, 29 meters in height and the only really elevated place on the island. On the rock, you may find the ruins of the old lighthouse. The lighthouse holds a short scary story at night. It is about the last lighthouse keeper, Victorio Alvarez. The story says that Alvarez went mad and started raping and killing, until he ended up getting killed by one of the women.
The beaches are the other main tourist attractions of Clipperton. There are two wrecks from Mexican fishing boats, Lily Marie and Oco, which can be found on the shores of the island. They have attracted many tourists for many years. Just make sure you don’t repeat their mistake. The coast is also surrounded by fine white sandy beaches.
Clipperton Island Activities
Clipperton is not a typical island you may be thinking when it comes to the offered recreations. The water that surrounds the island attracts far more tourists than the island itself for the fishing trips. The waters are a habitat for the rare Clipperton Angelfish. You can also go wildlife-watching. It will be part of your day whether you like it or not, despite the fact that there are not many species on the island.
Clipperton Island Accommodation & Dining
There are no accommodations on Clipperton Island; you will have to set up your own camp. The island offers many campsites. There are allotted fences for the crabs and earplugs for the noise of the large population of birds. Enjoy self-catering in the island of Clipperton. Enjoy cooking your own food by the beach.
Clipperton Island Shopping & Nightlife
Nights are even more unique in Clipperton. There are no nightclubs and bars. The only way to enjoy the night is having some good time with your friend beside a campfire. There are some souvenir shops in the island. You can get a unique gift for your kids, the booby nests. The nests have been reported to have some kid’s toy. The toys carried to the shore of the island are often incorporated into the bird’s nest.
Getting To & Around Clipperton Island
You can reach the island using a boat or Albatross or float plane in the lagoon. There are no conventional tourist trips to Clipperton Island, you will have to go by your own boat or join an expedition. To make the journey there as short as possible, Acapulco is a good port from which to start.
