Bougainville is the largest island of the Solomon Islands archipelago, and part of Papua New Guinea. The island is about 1000km from Port Moresby which is the capital city of Papua New Guinea. The island enjoys a tropical monsoon season with few extremes of temperature and weather. The best time to visit the island is from April to November.

Bougainville caters tourists with activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, game fishing and swimming as well as bushwalking, caving expeditions, a six-hour downhill hike from Panguna to Arawa and a three-day jungle trek to the summit of Mount Balbi, a dormant volcano. Relics of German and Japanese occupation abound throughout Papua New Guinea and visitors will have no trouble finding them. The wreck of Admiral Yamamoto’s plane in the rainforest of Buin is perhaps one of the most interesting.
