Prince Edward Island Overview

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is one of the Atlantic Provinces of Canada and is the only island province. Prince Edward Island's climate may be classified as a maritime or subtropical, with moderately cold winters and moderately warm summers that are rarely uncomfortable. It is best to avoid the stormy months from December to April.

Prince Edward Island Main Attractions

'The Island,' as the local call it, is well known for the beach, seafood, music and Anne of Green Gables House. The Anne of Green Gables House became the 'Cradle of Confederation' after the Fathers of Confederation met there in 1864 to discuss the possible union of five British North American colonies. Canada was then formed three years later. This has been a major focus of attraction in Prince Edward Island for many of year now.

Prince Edward Island is also famous different places that are worth a visit. Gateway Village, located just off the Confederation Bridge is one of them. It is a 30 acre development of food and retail shop aimed at tourists. Located in this village is the Visitor Information Centre that provides free maps and tourist information. A harbor, the Malpeque is the source of not just the famous oyster but many postcards and posters of the picturesque fishing boats, colorful barn-shaped boat-houses, and neatly stacked lobster traps. There are many more to visit in this small province.

Prince Edward Island Activities

Apart from the usual activities in other provinces such as tours, bar-hopping, etc, PEI offers a different taste of activity. The Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown hosts a variety of theatrical and musical acts throughout the year in addition to the long running Anne of Green Gables musical which plays every summer. The centre also houses a small art gallery and a public library. The Victoria Playhouse in picturesque Victoria by the Sea presents up to 85 live theatre and performance events each season. The playbill includes a mix of established classics and new plays by young playwrights.

Prince Edward Island Accommodation & Dining

The Island showcases a range of accommodations from villas to bed and breakfast to hotel accommodations. Some accommodations showcase the beautiful overlooking view of the Confederation Bridge. One of them is the Briarcliffe Inn. It is a perfect place to relax, enjoy the beaches, and let the innkeepers prepare your meal while you sit back and relax with a glass of complimentary wine. In recent years, PEI has seen a tremendous improvement in the quality of its restaurants. The traditional tourist restaurants serving boiled lobsters with all-you-can-eat coleslaw still exist.

Prince Edward Island Shopping & Nightlife

There are numerous nightclubs where you can spend the night having some shots, just be aware that the legal drinking age in PEI is 19. Bars, clubs and liquor stores will typically ask for a government-issued ID from anyone who looks under 25. Besides nightlife, shopping is also a major tourist's gatherer in the province island.

Getting To & Around Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is served by a single airport that receives flights from Air Canada or Air Canada Jazz, Westjet, Sunwing and Delta Air Lines. You can take these flights from Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Boston or Detroit. Throughout the summer months, cruise liners stop in Charlottetown for one day visits.
