Cape Bretton Island Overview
Cape Breton Island is the northernmost island in Nova Scotia. Cape Breton Island used to be a separate colony and now merged to Nova Scotia. The climate of Cape Breton is fairly moderate, but it is important to keep in mind that the weather conditions of coastal regions of the region are typically cooler and more volatile. The best time to visit the island is during the summer season when it is breezy and warm.

Cape Breton Island has consistently lost industrial investment and jobs in the past ten years. However, the closing of the coal and steel industry coupled with the presence of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which buffers the pristine northern half of the island from its more commercialized southern half, have no doubt contributed to the island's very positive ratings for ecological stewardship and spectacular scenery.
Cape Breton is noted for its unique and vibrant traditional Scottish violin music incubated by its relative isolation over the years- so much so that music lovers from Scotland come here for a taste of their own past. Typically a duo of violin and piano play hearty dance music that can be seen at community halls throughout the island. The early-evening tourist-targeted concerts are well advertised; later at night you can find ones that draw the entire local community.

With the major attractions of the Cape Breton, you can expect a wide range of adventure and relaxation for your vacation. You can have the sound of the island's music option like Celtic, some Acadeco, jazz and an increasing amount of world music. There are also boats that have tours to sight whales in the open seas. Also, enjoy lots of biking and hiking tours to view the highlands of Cape Breton.

A good number of Bed & Breakfasts and hostels are dotted throughout the Cape Breton Island. Most of them are standing just across the main attractions of the island. It is an amazing way to view these attractions just by going out of your room and have a taste of what the island is bragging about. Some of the accommodations in Cape Breton have inclusive meal, but there are also more restaurants to visit to sample the local food of the island. Seafood, especially lobster, is the thing to eat on Cape Breton. The Aspy Bay oysters are also good.
Cape Bretton Island Shopping & Nightlife
Having music as an attraction, you can't miss to enjoy the night without listening to the music of Cape Breton. Bars and pubs have live performances of the islands music and plenty of drinks to choose from. Many of the smaller communities have only a general store that sells groceries, sundries, acts as a post office, etc. These small general stores, however, have a very limited selection of groceries ñ better to stop in a bigger centre for groceries.
Getting To & Around Cape Bretton Island
The most common way to get into Cape Breton is by car via Trans-Canada Highway at the Canso Causeway from the mainland of Nova Scotia. Cape Breton is also serviced by Sydney Airport. Most Flights to and from Sydney go to Halifax and then to major destinations such as Toronto, Boston and Montreal.
