Kefalonia Overview
Kefalonia, also known as Kefaloonia and Kefallinia, is an island in the Ionian Islands in Greece. The climate of Kefalonia is temperate with mild winters, hot summers and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Kefalonia boasts the most sunshine among all Greek regions. The best time to visit the island is during the high summer, that’s July and August.
Kefalonia Main Attractions
The famous attraction of Kefalonia is the pretty waterside villages most of which are situated in the northern region of the island, amongst the cypress and fir clad background. Most of the houses are old Venetian, as was fortunate enough to escape the dramatic earthquake of 1953 that devastated the island. The northern peninsula became famous for its picturesque villages. One of them is the Assos, the favorite of Lord Bryon, with its castle, pretty little waterfront and tranquil lifestyle. On outside peak seasons, the villages go back to being a small relaxed fishing village.
Another attraction of the Kefalonia is the island itself and the components that make up the island. One of these is the highest peak of Mount Aenos, the Megas Soros at an altitude of 1628 m. The Mount Aenos also became famous for its Monte Negro or “black mountain” because its forest gave it a dark appearance when viewed from afar. Another attraction of Kefalonia is the locals. These beautiful locals are very accommodating, warm hearted, courteous and hospitable. They well presented a humble and tranquil lifestyle. The island is also a home for an interesting flora and fauna.
Kefalonia Activities
During the summer, the island throbs with life and lots of activities. A carefree crowd form every corner of the globe strolls the beaches or the quite coves, enjoying a dip in the sea, sipping ouzo in a seaside ouzeri, or a cup of coffee little coffee shop of a mountain village with the serene Ionian Sea at its feet. Some try to learn the traditional cuisines, dance, music, wine making and festivities passed down generation to generation.

Accommodations in Kefalonia are different. Most of them are apartments however as there are relatively few hotels. Many of these amazing places to stay in are lying by the sea to enjoy a nice view of the crystal clear waters and the soothing breeze. The personnel are very accommodating and hospitable to ensure a nice unforgettable holiday. The restaurants in kefalonia are just as wonderful. They serve a variety of food for the visitors to enjoy. You can enjoy the island’s specialty - meat pie – served in almost all of the restaurants. The menus tend to be the same in most places to tap into local cuisines.
Kefalonia Shopping & Nightlife
Nightlife in Kefalonia is different. In the evening there are bars that commonly play Greek music after a banquet. These bars are locally known as tavernas. Shopping is also as different experience. There is a main shopping area in the island. It is usually well stocked. There are also many souvenir shops throughout the island.
Getting To & Around Kefalonia
The main airport is located near Argostoli and Lassi, and is a typical small island airport. The main travel days are Tuesday and Sunday. You can also arrive by frequent ferry from Italy, the Greek mainland, or other islands.
