Canary Islands Overview

The Canary Islands are an Atlantic territory of Spain on the west coast of Africa, near Morocco, Cape Verde and the archipelagos of the Azores Islands and Madeira Islands. The climate of the island is subtropical. With eternal spring, anytime is a good time to go, however the peak season of the islands is from July thru September.

Canary Islands Main Attractions

The famous attraction of Canary is the world’s third largest volcano, the Tiede. It is an amazing site to explore. A cable car service will carry you up to its smoldering peak, the highest point in Spanish territory. You may also hike to catch the dawn and watch Tiede’s shadow reaching across the clouds below. The views from here are very breathtaking and you can see all the other islands.

Another attraction of the island is the Las Cueva de los Verdes, also known as the Green Caves. It was named after the family that discovered them and not because of the color of the caves. There are Lanzorate formed intricate underground network of lava tubes. There are also stories telling tales of pirates and other hidden dangers in the caves.

Canary Islands Activities

Activities in Canary Islands are really adrenaline boosters. You can enjoy lots of water sports. You may do deep-sea fishing, a somewhat old tactic of catching fish; and snorkeling and diving to enjoy the view of the underwater world. There are also land activities like biking, golfing, playing tennis, hiking and Canarian Wrestling.

Accommodations in Canary are unique. All of the islands have what you can call paradors, state-controlled hotels that reflect the culture of the islanders. They also offer casa rurals or country cottages for alternatives. They are basic but authentic self-catering accommodation for up to eight people. The cottages or casa in Canary follows the Canarian architecture and furnishing. The personnel for paradors and hotels are very hospitable and caring for their visitors. Restaurants here are superb. The Canary Islands are famous for fresh fish cuisines and seafood. They also serve fresh vegetables that grow on the fertilized volcanic soil of Mount Tiede.

Canary Islands Shopping & Nightlife

The islands are known for a lively and loud nightlife. There are many bars and clubs that play all sorts of music and serve different beverages for their visitors and practitioners. They serve wine, beer, barraquito and rum. The party starts as night falls and ends when you have drunk a lot. Shopping is superb in Canary. The Canary Islands has managed to keep their status of lower import tax and VAT rates - duty free, so if you are looking to buy tobacco, wines, spirits, perfumes and maybe some electrical goods, look no further as they are much cheaper here than in other EU countries! But please remember, unlike other European Union Countries, there is a strict limit to the amount that you are allowed to export out of the Canary Islands into the UK and other EU countries.

Getting To & Around the Canary Islands

You can reach the island using the Spanish company Naviera Armas. It is a ferry that sails from Portimao on the mainland Paorugal via Madiera. You can also use a charter flight from Europe.
