Seychelles Island Travel

Seychelles Overview

Located off the coast of East Africa and northeast of Madagascar is Seychelles. It’s a group of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean. Seychelles is hot and humid but the heat is usually soothed by the refreshing breezes, especially by the beaches. The cooler times in Seychelles are during the southeast monsoon season of May to September while the warmer times are during the northwest monsoon season of November to March but there’s usually more rain during these times. Peak seasons for travellers are during December to January and July to August.

Seychelles Main Attractions

If you find yourself in Seychelles, visit the Aldabra Atoll. This is the world’s largest coral atoll and encloses a tidal lagoon. Aldabra also happens to be the original home of the giant tortoise. You can also see other wildlife including tiger sharks and manta rays.

Other places to see in Seychelles would be the beaches. Most of the beaches are virtually untouched and refreshingly not crowded. Also visit the Vallee de Mai which is considered to be a world heritage site and where you can find the world’s largest seed, the coco de mer.

Seychelles Activities

As for things to do in Seychelles, there’s a host of water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing and fishing. There are also land sports like golf, tennis, badminton, biking and hiking. Bike rentals and walking tours are the best way to sightsee. Bird watching is also a popular activity as Seychelles is home to many of the world’s most beautiful and treasured species of animals.

Seychelles Accommodation & Dining

Seychelles isn’t tolerant with backpackers who show up at the airport without any accommodations so be prepared. Most places are pretty expensive with some islands only having one hotel. Your best option is to find an apartment or bungalow which can be rented for affordable rates. Fortunately, the cuisine is more forgiving. You can easily find Creole cooking, seafood dishes and curries all over the island’s restaurants.

Seychelles Shopping & Nightlife

If you’re wondering about shopping, the best place to go is Victoria. The capital city is the home to Seychelles Buy and Sell. There are also other outlets on the island Praslin but few on other islands. And of course, the hotels have their own gift shops. Seychelles is also home to a fantastic nightlife. The active nightlife usually goes on right by the larger hotels. There are also theaters, cinemas, discos and restaurants to occupy you. But if you’re more of the type to want to relax, enjoying a nice drink on the beach at night is also a great way to spend your evening.

Getting To & Around the Seychelles

If you’re planning to make a trip, the only international gateway to Seychelles is Seychelles International Airport in Victoria. Air Seychelles flies to and from Paris, London, Johannesburg, Rome, Milan, Frankfurt, Mauritius and Singapore. Kenya Airways from Nairobi, Emirates from Dubai, Qatar Airways from Doha, Condor from Frankfurt and Martinair from Amsterdam also offer regular charter services to Seychelles. You can also travel to Seychelles via boat.
