Mauritius Island Travel

Mauritius Overview

Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean, just east of Madagascar. The island’s climate is tropical with very little temperature differences between its two seasons of summer and winter. Depending on which temperatures you prefer, you can visit the island during the hottest months of December to February or the coolest months of June to August. However, do take note that cyclones do occur during December to April.

Mauritius Main Attractions

Grand Bay to the north of the island is the first area to ever experience the tourist boom, therefore the most developed area to suit travellers. This area is considered to be a shopping and leisure paradise that even locals travel to when they want to have some fun. Grand Bay serves as the host for Pereybere, a public beach popular for its shops, restaurants and bars; Balaclava Ruins; Triolet Shivala, the longest village on the island which has a huge Hindu temple that honors Shiva, Krishna, Vishnu, Muruga, Brahma and Ganesha; and the Labourdonnais Orchards.

There are many other places to see all over the island as each area has something to offer. There’s Ile aux Cerfs, a haven for water sports enthusiasts, to the East. There’s the Dutch Ruins to the Southeast where you can see ruins of the first Dutch settlers. To the West is Casela, a bird park stretching over 25 hectares and housing over 140 species of birds from 5 continents. At the interior is the national park Black River Gorges which was created for the protection of Mauritius’ native forests. That’s only 1 attraction per area but there’s plenty more to see.

Mauritius Activities

With so many places to see, you can be sure that there are also loads to do in Mauritius. You can tour the Moka mountains via quad bike, horse of 4-wheel drive. There are also full-day sight-seeing tours and safari trips. You can also indulge in a variety of water sports and activities including deep sea fishing, parasailing, diving, water skiing and swimming. You can also go rock climbing, canyoning and so much more!

Mauritius Accommodation & Dining

There are plenty of places to suit your tastes when it comes to accommodations in Mauritius. There are hotels and resorts situated right at the beach, right by the national park and there are even bed & breakfasts for those who want cheaper accommodations. Restaurants in Mauritius also offer everything that you could imagine with cuisines derived from the culinary traditions of the French, Indian, Chinese, and Africans. Mauritians also have a sweet tooth so you can find many places selling cakes and other pastries.

Mauritius Shopping & Nightlife

When it comes to shopping, don’t expect to be able to hone your bartering skills in Mauritius. However, there are still bargains to be had. There are many large brand names in the textile industry that are manufactured in Mauritius and you can often find overruns or slightly flawed items at a fraction of the price in other countries. Mauritius is also a great place to find uniquely designed jewellery and other handicrafts.
