Comoros Island Travel

Comoros Overview

The Comoros is an island nation off the coast of East Africa, in between the northern part of Mozambique and the northern part of Madagascar. If you’re planning on making a trip to The Comoros, you might want to schedule your trip sometime between May and November as cyclones are pretty prone to occur during the rainy months of December to April.

Comoros Main Attractions

The top attraction on Comoros is Mount Karthala. You can climb to the peak and then descend into the crater of the active volcano. It is being claimed that the crater is the largest still active anywhere in the world.

Hikers can also travel to Dziani Boundouni which is a sulphurous crater lake on the island of Mwali. Travellers can also visit the fishing village of Itsandra, once the ancient capital, where you can find royal tombs and a fortress. There are also some hot sulphur springs at Lac Sale and a 14th-century village at Iconi. There’s also a magnificent waterfall to looks at Miringoni. The Comoros’ is also home to the protected green turtle which can be seen in the marine reserve off of Mwali’s southern coast. Giant turtles may also be seen at Niumashuwa Bay.

Comoros Activities

Apart from hiking, Comoros also has amazing diving facilities and beach resorts. You can also take some tours at the perfume distilleries at Bambao. Sail boats and canoes are also available for rent in many of the islands’ ports.

Comoros Accommodation & Dining

There are only just a few hotels and pensions in the Comoros, mostly located in Moroni and Mutsamudu. The places here usually handle the needs of travelling businessmen, government officials and other visitors. Sharing rooms is quite common as prices can be on the steep side. Restaurants on the islands serve lots of good food, usually making use of the many spices that can be found on Comoros, resulting in spiced sauces and rice-based dishes. Make sure you order specialties with cassava, plantain, couscous, goat meat and seafood.

Comoros Shopping & Nightlife

As for drinking and the nightlife, there’s not much fun to be had as there are restrictions due to the largely Muslim heritage of the islands. However, hotels do serve alcohol but at a very steep price. Instead of indulging yourself with drinks, indulge yourself with the many products you can buy in Comoros, including gold, pearl and shell jewellery, textiles, embroidered skull-caps, slippers, carved chests and pottery. Most items can be seen and bought in the villages where they are made.

Getting To & Around the Comoros

There’s 1 international airport on the Comoros, Moroni International Prince Said Ibrahim. You can travel to the islands via Air Austral, Air Madagascar, Air Tanzania, Sudan Airlines, Yemenia Yemen Airways and Air France. You can also travel by freighters that leave from Zanzibar and Madagascar. Travelling by sea is usually cheaper than flying but travel time is longer and departure dates aren’t as reliable.
