Molokai Island Overview
Molokai is an island in Hawaii and is considered to be the place to go to when you are looking for a nice relaxing holiday at a slower pace of life but still getting the taste of Hawaii. The beaches are often quite deserted throughout the year. You can visit the island anytime between April and November when the climate is at its most favorable.
Molokai Island Main Attractions
Perhaps the most significant landmark on Molokai is the Kamehameha V Summer Home. While it’s now mostly ruins, it still offers an idea of its former magnificence when it served as a holiday home for King Kamehameha V, the king of Hawaii between 1863 and 1872. You can visit this landmark any day and admission is free.
Other landmarks to visit on Molokai tend to be around both Kaunakakai and Kamalo. These landmarks include the Kamalo Wharf and Molokai Harbour, where many tourists come to simply watch the coming and going of luxury yachts. The Kamakou Preserve is also of great appeal due to the ancient, naturally formed Mount Kamakou. It’s an imposing landmark which dominates much of the island. Also, try to visit Kaunakakai’s Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove which is home to a group of palms which was planted over 150 years ago.
Molokai Island Activities
Considering that this is an island in Hawaii we’re talking about, you can’t go to Molokai without hitting the beach or taking part in any other water sports like snorkelling and scuba diving. Tourists can also enjoy attractions such as whale watching, mule rides, tours to local coffee plantations and macadamia nut farms and a round of golf next to the beach. A trip to Kalaupapa National Historical Park is also another must-do in Molokai. You can go on guided tours which explain the world-famous history of the island’s past, isolated settlement.

Accommodations on the island are most popular on the main beaches. The hotels are known for their excellent service. Staying in Molokai also gives you a great taste of Hawaii as most of the island remains quite unchanged even as tourism rates rise. The same can be said when it comes to dining in Molokai as Hawaii cuisine is very much a highlight. Servings of tuna, blue marlin, red snapper and swordfish are must try seafood choices.
Molokai Island Shopping & Nightlife
If you want to go shopping on Molokai, you can easily find souvenirs like dancing hula girls, table lamps, carved wooden figurines, beach wear, sarongs, mugs, shark’s tooth necklaces and jewellery boxes, among many other things. And speaking of dancing hula girls, while there’s not a lot of parties on the usually quiet island, there’s still the occasional luau and festivals that can make your nightlife interesting.
Getting To & Around Molokai Island
You can get to Molokai via the multiple daily flights from Honololu aboard Pacific Wings or IslandAir. You can also travel by boat from Lahaina to Kaunakakai.
