Lanai Island Overview

Lanai has been known to be a tropical paradise among the chain of the Hawaiian Islands. The best time to go to Lanai is during the winter season which is from the middle of October to April, if you are a surfing enthusiast. While the summer season in Lanai runs from May until mid-October. Peak season is during December until April, so those who are traveling on a tight budget avoid these months. Another peak season of Lanai is during June until August since this is when families are mostly in vacation since its school break.

Lanai Island Main Attractions

One of the famous attraction in Lanai is the Luahiwa Petroglyphs. It can be found at the south-central of Lanai and is just worth fifteen minutes drive from Lanai City. It is a collection of drawings made on lava rocks. Deciphering the petroglyphs today would be impossible since its meaning is no longer known to man. These petroglyphs are preserved through ages with the help of the island’s arid climate.

There are also hiking trails that hiking enthusiasts can explore as well as coral reefs and varieties of native flowers and of course the scenic views of the island. It would be best to try the Munro Trail for hiking, and continue on to Lanauhale’s volcanic ridge for a break and sight-seeing. Visiting Keomuku Village which was once a busy settlement in Lanai would also be an option. Another attraction would be the landscapes that resemble the lunar surface of Kaehiakawelo also known as the Garden of the Gods as well as those that can be found in the Kanepuu Preserve.

Lanai Island Activities

Guests would enjoy surfing best during the winter season while during the summer season, one could enjoy golfing at the Cavendish Golf Course or at the Challenge at Manele, sailing to the nearby islands or even just strolling to gaze at the island’s spectacular view. One can avail of a helicopter tour to gaze at the island in a bird’s eye view. The Dole Plantation Park on the other hand can also be used as a picnic area. It also has restaurants and shopping areas where you an enjoy yourself. The beaches of course, would always be an option for you to enjoy your vacation.

Lanai restaurants can be very flexible as they offer different cooking styles and serve different cuisine selections. They range from inexpensive coffee cafes and bagel shops to upscale fine dining. Cafes in Lanai City are known to serve the best Kona coffee, a Hawaiian specialty. Low-key eateries are also around if you only want to grab a bite. For the best accommodations in the island, you can try out the Hotel Lanai and Lanai City Grille, a country inn from way back the 1920’s.

Lanai Island Shopping & Nightlife

The only happening nightlife happens in the Lanai Playhouse. It can be found at the corner of Seventh. The Lodge at the Koels’s Great Hall is also a great place to spend the night partying. Shopping would be possible at the following places: Dole Plantation, Rihard’s Shopping Center, and at the Sundry Shop.

Getting To & Around Lanai Island

You can reach Lanai through flights to the Lanai Airport. It is of short distance from Lanai City and is located in Palawai, Basin. You can also try boarding ferries to reach the island.
