Guernsey Overview

Guernsey is a group of islands in the English Channel and is part of the Channel Islands. The islands of Guernsey represent the last remnants of the medieval Dukedom of Normandy, which held sway in both France and England. The island enjoys 200-260 hours of sunshine during the popular holiday season from Easter to October.

Guernsey Main Attractions

The famous attraction of Guernsey is its colorful history. Guernsey embraces its history greatly and is proven as most of the monuments of the past still exist in this current era. There is the Castle Cornet standing as you overlook the harbor in St Peter Port. It was built during the reign of King Stephen and it bears influences from many eras, through to the German occupation during World War II. There are also sites that reflect a prehistoric Guernsey, like the Dehus Dolmens. It is a common to have dolmens (Neolithic tombs) on the island.

Other attractions of the Guernsey islands are beautiful beaches. These beaches boast its beauty and tranquility as you take a peek of it. The beaches can be a living museum for you can witness some shipwrecks and the like by the bay. There are also some maritime museums by the beach. One of these maritime museums is the Fort Grey Maritime Museum of Roquaine Bay. The museum focuses on Guernsey’s shipwreck. The Roquaine Bay is also home to flocks of sea birds and is accessible to walkers at low tide.

Guernsey has Eisteddfod Society Annual Festival that celebrates the best of arts and academic events and culminates in an exhibition at the end of Mach. You can participate in the said event. You can also have cliff-top walks and enjoy interesting strolls around the island’s cliff paths. Aside from these activities, you can hit the beach and have fun diving, snorkeling, surfing, swimming or any water sport you are fond of.

Guernsey can only be reached by plane or boat. Guernsey’s airport has flight links to United Kingdom, France, Isle of Man, Jersey, Alderney, Netherlands and Germany. Ferries run from St Peter Port to the UK, France and other Channel Islands.
