Whitsunday Islands Overview
The Whitsunday Islands are a group of 74 islands that lie off the coast of Queensland, Australia and form part of the Great Barrier Reef. The islands are one of the most popular Australian tourist destinations. The vast majority of islands are designated national parks and major attractions. The group of islands has a tropical climate. The best time to visit the islands is the dry months of August and September.

The Whitsunday's dazzling bright blue waters are teeming with all kinds of wildlife. Whitsunday island is the largest in the archipelago and famous for the must see Whitehaven Beach. It is by far the most recognized of all the Whitsundays landmarks. Stretching about 4.5 kilometers and consisting of fine brilliant white sand, it showcases the picture that is used more often in tourism brochures and regularly on TV advertising in Australia.
Hamilton Island is the most developed and populated Whitsunday Island. Like every other islands in Whitsunday, Hamilton has best known and most spectacular locations on the Great Barrier Reef. Though the island is populated, the natural wonders are well protected. The surrounding coral covers are very excellent and make great sites for diving. The surrounding water is home for all sorts of tropical marine life.

The archipelago of Whitsunday is rich in amazing and beautiful water. There are sea kayak expeditions that last for six fabulous days of exploring the outer Whitsunday islands ñ camping at night on deserted beaches and snorkeling over amazing fringing coral reefs. The Whitsunday region is the breeding ground of the magnificent Humpback Whale that there are also some boat or catamaran tours for sighting of these huge creatures.

For the night owls, there are plenty of pubs and nightclubs especially on Shute Harbour Road offering live bands or DJs and the chance to dance the night away to the early hours of the morning any night of the week. Every island in the archipelago has large shopping centers. Enjoy shopping as much as you want.
Getting To & Around the Whitsunday Islands
Hamilton Island and Proserpine are the airports that service the region. Boats depart from adjacent to the airport at Hamilton to many of the Whitsunday Island resorts. Alternatively you can get the bus from Proserpine to Shute Harbor, and out to the islands from there. There are agents that will offer and price inclusive of this transfer.
