Stewart Island Overview

Stewart Island is the medium sized island of New Zealand - far smaller than the two main islands but far bigger than the other small islands. It is located 24 km to the south of the South Island, separated by Foveaux Strait. Stewart Island's changeable weather can bring four seasons in one day. Frequent downpours create a misty, mysterious air and lots of mud, making boots and waterproof clothing mandatory.

Stewart Island Main Attractions

Stewart Island is regarded as a Hiker's heaven as it is full of fantastic walks. You will find a list of all walks at the Visitor Information Centre at Oban along with a flora and fauna guide. The Rakiura track, a 3-day walk starting at Oban and the North West Circuit track are the two most popular walks. A variety of tours are on offer all year round including scenic walks, visits to the Ulva Island bird sanctuary, fishing trips, nature tours and Kayaking.

Ulva Island in relative isolation but with easy access from Stewart Island is a sanctuary for both birds and plants, holding species that are rare or have died out on the mainland of New Zealand. In 1997, the island was declared rat-free, following an eradication program, and extirpated birds have been reintroduced to the island. The birds include the South Island saddleback (tieke), yellowhead (mohua) and Stewart Island robin (toutouwai).

Along with the outstanding waterfront and the warm hospitality, there's no way to spoil your vacation. When it comes to dining, Stewart Island tends to be at lying low status. They may recommend you to some restaurants that serve fish and chips or any snack or meal. Having a self-catered meal may not be a problem. They are some grocery stores in the island.

Stewart Island Shopping & Nightlife

The Pubs are the social centre for the Stewart Island. There's a range of fine ales and cider on tap, with a pool table and darts for recreation. You can also try a wee dram of the house, premium single-malt Scotch. It's Oban Whisky - all the way from their sister city on the other side of the world. You won't wear yourself out on a Stewart Island shopping spree - there aren't enough shops. However you will find all the essentials. Ship to Shore general store carries a good range of fresh food and grocery lines. There's the Lettuce Inn for fresh fruit and veggies. Most shops have a range of souvenirs.

Getting To & Around Stewart Island

To get to Stewart Island requires crossing the Foveaux Strait, about 22 nautical miles or approximately 39 km from Bluff to Oban / Half Moon Bay. There is a scheduled ferry service from Bluff, near Invercargill, with multiple departures during the day. The crossing takes one hour and is operated by Stewart Island Experience.
