Poruma Island Travel

Poruma Island Overview

Poruma Island is located between Australia and Papua New Guinea in the Torres Strait Archipelago. The climate of the island like most of the islands of the coast of Queensland ranges from hot and humid in the far north to comfortable cool temperatures in the southeast. If you want the sunny days and warm weather, you must visit during the autumn and the spring. That's from March to May and from September to November.

Poruma Island Main Attractions

Poruma Island is a home for delectable fruits just hanging by the giant trees. You will then spend several strange but deliriously wonderful minutes knocking fruit from the giant trees at the end of the runway, and depart with fingers sticky with juice. This is not your usual flight, but then these are not your usual islands.

Poruma, which lies about midway along this island chain, is fairly typical of the inhabited islands - a narrow coral cay about two kilometers long with a village of about 200 toward its western end. The huts are situated on the western end of the island, the best location for beautiful sunsets. Islanders call this end "gaigalkuth" which means 'sunset end'. This provides a good view of the sunset and the great view of the horizon and the mainland of Australia.

Poruma Island Activities

For guest, one of the chief delights of staying at Poruma is the islanders themselves. Throughout your stay, there are chance events that create moments to treasure - listening to the silky voices of the island choir when they rehearse in the cool of the evening, walking through the village at dusk, when the children are out playing and the streets are bathed in golden light, or falling asleep to the sound of waves on the beach and wind in the coconut palms.

Poruma Island Accommodation & Dining

Accommodations in Poruma can give every visitor an overview of the island's living. Built in the authentic Poruma style, each stunning hut is luxuriously equipped and furnished, with a king-sized bed on elevated platform that is enclosed by a mosquito net. The huts are situated on the western end of the island, the best location for beautiful sunsets. Experience seafood delights of Poruma like the delicious local painted crayfish, magnificent king prawns, sashimi, mud crabs, and coral trout. Try native foods including wongaii, arrowroot, mangoes, yams and papaya.

Poruma Island Shopping & Nightlife

Poruma Island is not laid down when it comes to nightlife. The nights are always gay and exciting. There are lots of gathering in every area, sharing foods and large ounces of spirits and cocktails. Poruma's shopping never gets dormant for the years. Shopping is a major service in the island. The island shops have much to offer for every guest.

Getting To & Around Poruma Island

Reaching Poruma Island may be tiring however exciting. Some of the flights to the island go island-hopping. You can also have Qantas flight from Cairns to Horn Island, then light aircraft to Poruma or have an alternative having charter aircraft from Cairns directly to Poruma.
