Norfolk Island Travel

Norfolk Island Overview

Norfolk Island is an island in the South Pacific Ocean and is an Australian territory. It is located at east of Sydney and Brisbane and northwest of Auckland. Norfolk has a marine subtropical climate that is characterized as mild. It is best to avoid the most of the rainfall from April to August in order to have a great vacation.

Norfolk Island Main Attractions

Norfolk has amazingly rich flora. The island itself has 174 native plants and 51 of them are endemic. The world's tallest tree-ferns can be found in the island, the Norfolk Island palm and smooth tree-fern. Before European colonization, most of Norfolk Island was covered with subtropical rain forest, the canopy of which was made of Norfolk Island pine in exposed areas, and the palm and tree ferns in more moist protected areas. However, the island is still beautiful and untouched even after development.

Norfolk Island is the site of one of the earliest European settlements in the Southwest Pacific. The Norfolk Island Museum complex is located in Kingston, one of the most historic sites in Australasia. The heritage town of Kingston includes the finest architectural remains of Australia's early colonization, including the New Gaol, barracks, stores, cemetery, offices, fine museums and historic homes. Recent excavations of Norfolk Island have confirmed that Polynesians settled on Norfolk Island some 800 years before Captain James Cook set foot ashore in 1774.

Norfolk Island Activities

When they talk about Norfolk, it is adventure, pleasure and fun. There are archery ranges in the island for excellent chance for a team building. Bird watching can also be a worthwhile recreation for Norfolk boasts a bird list of one hundred and sixteen species. Another outstanding recreation can be diving in the pristine underwater. And for some adventure, go on sea kayaking.

Norfolk Island Accommodation & Dining

As Norfolk's economy is based around tourism, there are a myriad of options for accommodation, ranging from basic one- or two-person rooms through to resort-style establishments with restaurants attached hosting seafood buffets. Accommodation elsewhere is designed to capitalize on views and proximity to nature. Norfolk Island, unsurprisingly, is famous for its seafood, which is generally caught fresh by most of the restaurants on the island. The local trumpeter is a particular delicacy.

Norfolk Island Shopping & Nightlife

Overlooking sub tropical gardens and bathed in natural light bars and clubs have open and welcoming atmosphere. They are the perfect places to unwind after a busy day touring or for a pre dinner aperitif. Enjoy a cocktail; an icy cold beer, your favorite tipple or be inspired to sample something new. As a result of the lack of many taxes and duties, Norfolk Island has acquired a reputation as a "shopper's paradise". A number of shops are described as "department stores", which can seem rather quaint to visitors from big cities, as these shops are often no larger than the others.

Getting To & Around Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island has a single airport occupying much of the south-east of the island. It is served by two airlines: Air New Zealand with a 737 aircraft operates flights from Auckland on Saturdays and Norfolk Air operates a code share with Qantas using a 737-300 aircraft chartered from Our Airline.
