Magnetic Island is an island directly off the coast of Townsville in Far North Queensland. Over the half the land area of the island is a National Park. The island has a tropical climate, with basically two seasons: wet and dry season. Between October and May is the best time to visit the island.

The island is a haven for wildlife. At most, 54% of the island is Magnetic Island National Park, which is mostly located on the steep hilly interior and rugged north-western side. The highest point on the island is Mount Cook reaching 497 mi. (1,631 ft) above sea level. One of the most distinctive inhabitants of Magnetic Island is the native bush stone-curlew - a bird with a piercing cry which has awakened many a visitor in the night when they are most active.
Two thirds of Magnetic Island is National Park with secluded but easily accessible bays and golden beaches. The Island has nearly 25 kilometers of walking tracks meandering through the protected national parks which are home to stands of eucalypts, more than 2,500 free-roaming koalas and 166 different species of wildlife.

Getting To & Around Magnetic Island
Magnetic Island is only accessible by boat from Townsville, which is 8 kilometers away and which has a well served airport. There are two ferry services, both arriving at the Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal: the Sunferries in Breakwater Terminal and Fantasea Magnetic Island Passenger & Car Ferry.
