Lady Musgrave Island Travel
Lady Musgrave Island Overview
Lady Musgrave Island is a 14-hectare coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef, with a 1,192-hectare surrounding reef. The island is the second island in the Great Barrier Reef chain of islands and is most easily reached from the town of 1770, Queensland, located approximately 5 hours north of Brisbane. The island lies just south of the Tropic of Capricorn, so conditions are mostly mild throughout the year. However, the best time to visit the island is between December and March.
Lady Musgrave Island Main Attractions
There is an enormous number of birds on the island. White-capped Noddy Terns nest in abundance in the Pisonia trees whilst Bridled Terns, Black-naped Terns and Silver Gulls nest on the ground in more open areas nearer the beach. There is no fresh water on the island, yet thousands of sea birds live and breed there and a variety of unusual plants thrive in the poor sandy soils.
Lady Musgrave is surrounded by a magnificent coral and white sand lagoon, and is cloaked in dense Pisonia Grandis rainforest, whilst She-Oak and Pandanus line the shore. The island is a true wilderness and the completely virgin coral cay. The beautiful turquoise lagoon surrounding the cay as far as the eye can see is filled with a myriad of wildlife, from brightly colored tropical fish through to giant sea turtles, dolphins and manta rays.
