Kangaroo Island Overview

Kangaroo Island or KI is an island about 45 minutes by ferry off the coast of South Australia. The island is 160 kilometers across, and has an abundance of wildlife, natural scenery, wineries and beaches. The island has a typically temperate climate with basically two seasons: summer and winter. The best time to visit the island is between October and May when the weather is much warm and dry than the other months.

Kangaroo Island Main Attractions

You will see wildlife on Kangaroo Island, both in the National Parks and reserves, and just in the farmland surrounding the roads. Most wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk. Koalas were introduced onto KI in the 1980s and a way of preserving a species that was considered on the mainland Australia. By 2007, koalas are being caught and transferred for they thrived to the extent that they were causing ecological damage to the island. However, there are still plenty elsewhere in the island but often hard to spot. You can try your luck around Vivonna Bay to see this amazing creature.

Aside from the diverse number of wildlife in the island, KI also boast amazing landscapes that are truly unique and remarkable. By remarkable, it is means a worthwhile visit to the Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park. True to their name, the rocks have remarkable formations. You can climb under them, over them and around them, and they really are interesting. The formation is around 500 meters from the car park, and is wheelchair accessible.

Kangaroo Island Activities

Aside the traditional activities in KI like swimming and diving in the beautiful waters, you can go to what they call the Little Sahara off South Coast Road and go sand boarding. Sand-boards are available for rent from Vivonna Bay Store. Don't try it on a bit of cardboard, as it just doesn't work. If you want to sand board, hire the board, wax it up and go down the hill.

Kangaroo Island Accommodation & Dining

Accommodation in Kangaroo Island ranges from basic hostel rooms, B&B to motel style accommodation. There is large range of rental home accommodation, catering to families. Camp sites are available as well. You can stay in Lighthouse cottages at Cape Borda and Cape Willoughby, where tours to the lighthouse are just outside your door. Restaurants and cafes are limited to major towns of KI. They offer the best foods that can surely tempt your taste.

Kangaroo Island Shopping & Nightlife

Nightlife can be a good reason to go to Kangaroo Island. They have bars and pubs in the major towns of the island. Just like in Penneshaw. It is a country style pub that gets busy serving food and drinks. There are also pubs in Kingscote and American River. Souvenir shops can be found in Kingscote and Penneshaw. You can buy your supplies at supermarkets in those to centers too.

Getting To & Around Kangaroo Island

There are two ways to get to Kangaroo Island. Ferries travel between Cape Jervis on the mainland and Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Ferries carry cars and passengers. If you're travelling in a car, air fares can be competitive with coach and ferry fares from Adelaide.
