Green Island Overview

Green Island is a 6000 year old coral cay located in Great Barrier Reef, just 27 km (17mi) offshore from the tropical North Queensland city of Cairns. Of the 300 coral cays in the Great Barrier Reef, Green Island is the only one with a rainforest. The island sits on the north-western edge of the reef flat. The surrounding reef is classified an "inshore patch reef". The island has a tropical climate, making May through October the best time to visit the island.

Different corals can be found on the Eastern and Western side, so it is well worth exploring.

Green Island Activities

Aside from the fabulous snorkeling and scuba diving, Green Island showcases lots of different recreations. You can join some tours that will let you view the underwater without being wet. There are glass bottom boats that will guide you to the reefs surrounding this coral cay. You can also see some sea turtle even when you are lazing by the beach and enjoying the spectacular view of the ocean.

Getting To & Around Green Island

Green Island is accessible by fast ferry from Cairns with Great Adventures Reef and Green Island Cruises. Great Adventures' fast modern catamarans take just 45 minutes to reach the island and depart at three convenient times daily.
