Fraser Island Overview

Fraser Island is a large sand island situated off the southern coast of the Australian state of Queensland. Located at 500km south of Tropic of Capricorn, Fraser Island has a hot and humid climate but is cooled by sea breezes. Dry seasons are extremely hot and the most winter days are sunny and frost free, giving the island all year possibilities for a visit.

Fraser Island Main Attractions

Being a 76-mile long island, you can expect much of the island adventure and lots to see. The main part of this adventure must be started on the famous lakes. There are two lakes on this island paradise you should visit. Lake Mackenzie, the jewel of the Fraser Island is a large perched lake with crystal blue waters and white sand. During the peak seasons, the area is one of the most crowd pleaser of the Fraser. Another lake is located 30 km from the beach. It is the green lake Wabby. This green lake has large sand blow that is slowly encroaching upon the lake.

Aside from the outstanding lakes, Fraser has lots of geographically unique attractions. At the northern end of the main beach of the island, you can spot a rocky outcrop, Indian Head. Climbing on the top of the rock can give you a scenic view of the ocean and you may spot sharks, rays, turtles and dolphins. By the north of this rock outcrop, there are the rock pools called Champagne Pools. They provide a safe place to bathe in sea water. The name is derived from the froth created when waves breaks over the edge and into the pools.
