Christmas Island Travel

Christmas Island Overview

Christmas Island is one of the islands of the Indian Ocean, south of Indonesia and some distance northwest of Australia, of which it is a territory. The Christmas Island has tropical climate with heat and humidity moderated by trade winds. It is recommended to visit the island during December to February to experience the great weather and to view the spectacular world famous Christmas Island Red Crab Migration.

Christmas Island Main Attractions

Christmas Island has unusual bodies of water that are worth experiencing. One of these is the Dales. The Dales comprises of numerous freshwater streams running roughly parallel to each other. The streams originate from underground caves and eventually flow into the ocean. The streams, over the length of time, have worn out gullies between the cliff walls of the coast, and have created unusually step-like formations (terraces). There is a waterfall above the terrace formations; visitors are often fond of taking a shower under the waterfall.

Another unusual yet amazing attraction of Christmas Island is the pristine beaches. You can find a beach comprising a sand area running down to a bathing pool in Lily Beach. It is tragically named after a girl who was swept off the rocks at the beach and never been found. The pool is separated from the open ocean by rocky basalt outcrops. The pool is constantly fed sea water from the gullies leading to the ocean and the whitewash generated from the waves hitting the cliffs and outcrop.

Christmas Island Activities

Aside from the typical land and water activities, Christmas Island boasts some of the best scuba diving trips in Australia and has some of the longest drop-offs in the world. The island rises dramatically from the edge of the Java Trench, Indian Ocean's deepest point. This contributes to the endless kilometers of spectacular drop-off diving with most walls being only 20 meters from the shoreline. Discover Christmas Island underwater, book a scuba diving trip. This unique marine environment is waiting to be explored.

Christmas Island Accommodation & Dining

Christmas Island offers a choice of accommodation ranging from boutique hotel, luxury self contained, and lodge style accommodation. You can enjoy the personalized service that only comes with smaller operations and enjoy ocean views from many of these outlets. Restaurants in Christmas Island are the best place to find the fine dining of your life. They serve Malay food and some from the international cuisines.

Christmas Island Shopping & Nightlife

Christmas Island is extremely quiet especially during the night and everyone loves it this way. There are recommended things to do during the night in Christmas Island. You can either stay in your lodge or get out and have some quiet time around the timeless tranquility of the surroundings. I dare say that most shopaholics won't be coming here in a big hurry after realizing the lack of chances to flex their shopping muscles. However, there are some gift shops and diving shops.

Getting To & Around Christmas Island

You can reach Christmas Island using different flights. There are twice weekly flights from Perth, Australia with National Jet Systems, who also offer a connecting flight to the Cocos Islands. Australian Indian Ocean Territories Airlines offer the only international flight on a chartered Malaysia Airlines aircraft from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore every Saturday.
