Koh Tarutao Overview
The island of Koh Tarutao is one of the 51 islands of Tarutao National Park in Satun Province, Thailand. The island was once actually a prison back the 1940s that transformed into a National Park. November to April is the best time to visit the island to avoid the dangerous monsoon winds of May to October. The National Park is actually closed during May 16 to November 15 for safety reasons.
Koh Tarutao Main Attractions
One famous attraction on the island is the island itself for it is a part of the most exquisite and unspoiled areas of the Tarutao National Park. Koh Tarutao is one of the first of the national parks in Thailand that is the embodiment of environmentally sound tourist management. Large developers are not allowed to establish resorts to preserve the unspoiled natural resources of the area, though they accepted the filming of the American reality-TV series Survivor in 2001. Only ecology friendly cabins and longhouses run by the government can accommodate the large number of tourists. A large number of different plants can be seen, as well as terrestrial and marine animals.
Another attraction on the island is its beautiful people. Not only the hospitality of the people but also the persevered aim of the government to maintain the beauty of the island. You could also experience the beauty of beaches and forests that surrounds that island. This makes Koh Tarutao the most visited island of Tarutao National Park.
Koh Tarutao Activities
There are a lot of activities that you can partake in when you visit Koh Tarutao. Tourists can take a walk on the beach and enjoy the sunset to complete your stay on the island. You can also go snorkelling or diving in variety of diving sites around the island or bathe in the beach to relax those tired working muscles.

Restaurants in Koh Tarutao run and managed by the national park serve a considerable range of quality meals, cold soft drinks, canned beer and bottled water. Ko Tarutao also has its own resort rooms or hotels for tourists to stay in. Rooms are fit for every type of tourist. All accommodations on the island also happens to be run by the National Park. Guests have a choice of staying in a tent or a fan-cooled bungalow that, while not luxurious, is comfortable enough to make a stay here pleasant. Bungalow personnel in the resort are also very accommodating.
Koh Tarutao Shopping & Nightlife
Shopping is different in the island. Mini-marts are available in Koh Tarutao for some shopping needs. However, they won’t allow you to shop more than you need for self-catering.
Getting To & Around Koh Tarutao
Once you book yourself a flight to Thailand, heading to the island is pretty easy. Going to Koh Tarutao, you can ride a bus labelled Phuket to Satun, passing through La-Ngu. Then, ride a Songthaew from La-Ngu to Pak Bara Pier. Lastly, a boat ride is needed to the island. You may ride a speedboat or a speedboat. It is advised to book an accommodation on the island well in advance, as it is frequently booked out.
