Saint Helena Island Travel

Saint Helena Overview

Saint Helena Island is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and is considered as one of the most isolated islands in the whole world. The climate described as tropical, marine and mild. There’s basically no time in the year which can’t be considered as the perfect time to visit.

Saint Helena Main Attractions

Perhaps one of the best attractions in Saint Helena is the Plantation House, which serves as the home of the island’s governor. The house looks like a Georgian mansion plucked right of England in the 1800s and dropped on the island. The grounds are beautiful and has a nature trail running through the park. There are even a number of Seychelles tortoises that inhabit the lawn, including one which is said to be the oldest vertebrate on earth.

Another good place to start your visit to Saint Helena will be the Jamestown Museum. Though like most attractions, the hours are limited. It’s found at the foot of Jacob’s Ladder, another must see, and features a variety of exhibits on the island’s history and natural history. Other attractions to see are The Castle, The Cenotaph, The Castle Gardens, Fortifications, the oldest Anglican church Saint James Church, the house where Napoleon spent his life of exile Longwood House, Saint Paul’s Cathedral and many more.

Saint Helena Activities

There’s really not that much to do when it comes to activities in Saint Helena except to be a tourist. With as much history as it has, practically every area of Saint Helena has a story to tell and a perfect photo op to provide for any traveller.

Saint Helena Accommodation & Dining

There are several hotels and lodges on the island but perhaps the best way to go when it comes to accommodations is self-catering. There are many locals who rent out houses or rooms for travellers. It’s a great way to meet locals and get the inside scoop on what it’s like to live on the island. This would also mean that cooking for yourself is the best option when it comes to eating. However, you may find some trouble finding ingredients are there are very little greens or dairy available. And despite its isolation, Saint Helena actually offers Chinese food and country style cooking that certainly suits every palate.

Saint Helena Shopping & Nightlife

If you’re wondering about the shopping, Saint Helena isn’t exactly the best place to buy things as everything on the island is brought in by boat. Thus, things are pretty expensive. There is one tourist shop on the main street of Jamestown and hotels have their own gift shops of course. The island museum also has a nice gift counter. A locally made high-proof liquor from cactus called Tungi is also a great buy. If the nightlife is what you’re after, try going to the Consulate Hotel or The Standard in Jamestown. Donny’s Place, also in Jamestown, is also a good place to go. It’s right down the way from Leisure Park and you can buy Tungi there too.

Getting To & Around Saint Helena

The only way to get to Saint Helena is by boat as there are no airports on the island. The RMS Saint Helena has regular round trips to and from the island and Cape Town.
